Beyond the Borders of Dissonance: Launching the Peter Whitehead Archive

The Peter Whitehead Archive is to be housed in a specially-converted area of DMU’s Clephan building and will be available for scholarship by researchers in DMU and the wider community of academics, artists and other practitioners. As we approach the 50th anniversary of the cultural turbulence of the late 1960s, the Archive will also form the foundation for exciting public engagement activity via exhibitions and theatrical performance.
To mark the Archive’s arrival at DMU, Peter has agreed to introduce a screening of his extraordinary film The Fall (1968) on Tuesday the 21st of June. Made in America between the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, The Fall documents a nation in turmoil and culminates in the violent break-up of the student occupation of Columbia University. Historically and politically significant, the film is also a very personal documentation of the artist’s response to the moments captured by his camera. The screening of The Fall will be followed by interdisciplinary responses to the film from Professor Ramsay Burt (DMU), Dr Marissia Fragkou (Canterbury Christ Church) and Dr Philip Hager (Winchester/ Kingston/ Canterbury Christ Church). The event will run from 14.40 - 18.45 in Clephan 3.03.
